At Home Spa Facial Treatment

Sometimes our skin needs a little TLC and spa treatments can be expensive so I thought I would share with you guys how I do a DIY facial treatment.  Its a little treat for your face and everyone should do this at least a fortnight to keep your skin fresh and glowing!


What you will need...


1.  cleanser.  This can be your usual daily cleanser.  I use Simples moisturising foaming cleanser or The Body Shops Seaweed cleanser which is great for combination skin.


2.  Make up remover, wipes will be fine the types that you can buy in packs such as Simple ones, or Biore wipes etc.


3.  An exfoliant (a cream type cleanser which has micro beads to remove dead skin cells)  Again this does not have to be expensive. Something like The Apricot Scrub which can be picked up at a drugstore or I use Garniers exfoliating blackhead scrub (if you are prone to blackheads like me)


4.  Either a bowl of hot steaming water or a facial steamer.  Obviously the bowl of water is your cheapest option yet you may want to invest in a facial steamer which can be bought for around £10-20.


5.  Toner - Again The Body Shop has a tea tree toner for around $4.50 if you are prone to spots and blemishes then this is great if not again search your drugstore for a cheaper version.


6.  A moisturiser - this can be your usual daily moisturiser.  I like to ensure that it has an SPF in and I use Neutrogena multi defence day and night creams.  Boots were doing an offer on this although I do not know whether it is still running.



Step 1 - Remove make up
If you are wearing make up then it is important that you remove it before cleansing your face.  A lot of cleansers are not designed to remove make up in the first instance so by removing it beforehand allows your cleanser to work more effectively.  
Step 2 - Cleanse
Fill your sink with warm water.  Not too hot and not too cold.  Using the cleansing facial wash gently massage all over your face avoiding the eye area.  Focus on your most troublesome areas i.e. those that are prone to oil and spots.  Rinse off and pat dry with a towel.  Ensure not to rub your face with the towel as this can aggravate the skin and cause it to produce excess oil which leads to blemishes so be gentle.  
Step 3 - Exfoliate
Fill the sink with fresh clean water as per the above and using your exfoliant scrub massage all over the face again avoiding the eye area and focusing on your problematic areas.  You might like to do this for 1-2 minutes.  Do not do it for too long as you could damage the skin and cause it to dry out.  
Step 4 - Steam

I purchased the myspa facial steamer for £19.99 from Argos.  I had been using the bowel method for some time however as I was steaming on a regular basis I invested in this.
If you do not have a facial steamer then grab a large bowel and fill with boiled water.  Place your face over the bowel at a comfortable distance so as not to burn your face.  Then place a towel over your head to keep the steam in.  Stay like this for 5-10 minutes.  If you feel it is too hot move your head away from the water further.  You might like to time this and put some music on to keep you entertained.  
Step 5 - Mask 
After steaming pat the face with a clean towel and then we are going to apply a mask.  I love the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque which you can find a review on if you click the link.  I tend to apply this with an old foundation brush which I clean after every use however you can use your fingers.  Leave the mask on for the recommended time.  In the case of this mask it is 20 minutes.  In this time you may wish to put cold cucumbers or tea bags over your eyes and lay back and relax.  After the time has elapsed rinse with cool water to ensure that your pores are closed to help prevent dirt getting into them.  Again pat dry with a towel.
Step 6 - Tone and moisturise
Toners work by closing the pores and help reduce the appearance of large pores if you are prone to these.  Using a cotton ball or pad saturate with toner and wipe all over your face and allow to dry.  Then apply a moisturiser as per usual.  
You may find that after the first few days of doing a facial you get a few spots.  Due to steaming your face and cleaning out the pores this is natural and it is the bodes way of bringing all the bad stuff to the surface and eliminating it.  Doing this once a week or once a fortnight will really help your skin.  
Obviously this is just what I do for an at home facial treatment and therefore I do not claim to be an expert in this.  All opinions are my own and therefore I cannot give expert individual skin care advice.  If you are having serious issues with your skin I would recommend seeing a dermatologist to determine the route cause and advise you on treatments and products.
