Neutrogena Microdermabrasion Kit - Complete Review

Neutrogena Microdermabrasion Kit

For the past 2 weeks now I have been using the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion Kit.  This is available for approximately £25 however if you shop around you can find it for a lot cheaper.

I had been looking for a microdermabrasion kit for some time and was reluctant to spend hundreds of pounds on the types which you find in salons purely for the fact that 1. I did not have hundreds of pounds to waste on a gadget I may only use once or twice and 2. I did not know how my skin would react.  So this product seemed perfect for a Microdermabrasion novice like myself.

What Neutrogena States...

The system has three components which work in unison to create dramatic effects on the skin's texture and glow.
  1. The PureGlow Micro-Oxide Crystallised Cream which contains the same aluminium-oxide crystals used by professionals for surface cellular renewal.
  2. The PureGlow System Applicator, with two speeds for control of the intensity of the application.
  3. The PureGlow Soft Foam Sponge Head which gently and evenly distributes the cream on the skin.

What they claim...

Dermatologists use microdermabrasion as a quick and easy way to reveal your skin's natural, healthy glow. It gently and effectively removes dead skin cells, stimulating surface cellular renewal, to reveal healthy youthful-looking skin beneath.
From day one, it enhances surface cell turnover for smoother, softer skin. From the end of the first week, it boosts skin clarity for visibly brighter skin that glows with health. From the fourth week, it diminishes the appearance of pores and fine lines.

The kit comes boxed and included is the following.

- Battery operated applicator
- 2 x AA batteries
- 50ml Micro-oxide crystallised cream

Firstly I loved the fact that the batteries were included as this meant I could get it out of the box immediately and use - if you are like me then you NEVER have batteries to hand.

How to use...

Step 1
  • Snap the Soft Foam Sponge Head onto the System Applicator.
  • Before use, cleanse skin with a mild, soap-free cleanser and gently pat dry

Step 2
  • Dot your face in 4 areas: chin, cheeks, forehead and nose.
  • At low or high speed, gently massage the Micro-Oxide Crystallised Cream over your skin using the handheld System Applicator.
  • Suitable for face only.
  • The vibration of the System Applicator in combination with the Sponge Head will gently and evenly distribute the cream for the appropriate level of skin resurfacing.
  • Massage no more than 1-2 minutes per facial area.
  • There is no need to press hard against your face, the Soft Foam Sponge Head should gently rest against your skin.
  • Avoid the eye area.
  • Using the System Applicator with the Soft Foam Sponge Head attached, lightly dip the Sponge Head directly into the Micro-Oxide Crystallised Cream.

Step 3

  • Pat dry and apply a moisturiser.
  • Remove the Soft Sponge Head from the System Applicator.
  • Clean it using a soap or general cleanser.
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before storing it in a dry place.
  • Change sponge after a maximum of one month use
  • Gently but thoroughly rinse skin with warm water.

The instructions state that the applicator can't be immersed in water which suggests that it is not completely waterproof so I have avoided using this in the shower as I do with my Clarisonic.

Seriously - when I first turned the applicator on and applied to my face I actually thought my head was going to explode! To be fair I did have it on the highest setting but even so this was a powerful little thing. When I rubbed some of the crystallised cream between my fingers it felt like sand, really rough sand and I was concerned that it would actually damage my face, yet when you apply it with the sponge applicator (which is incredibly soft) it does not feel rough at all.  After the 2 minutes I rinsed the product off and could instantly see that my face was smoother.  I'm not sure whether this was honestly this product or the fact I had not used a facial exfoliant for some time :) Anyhow it felt good!

The instructions advise that for normal skin you use it for a week continuously.  This seemed a lot to me for such an abrasive treatment but not being one to break the rules I followed this religiously, used every evening after cleansing and I did not have any adverse effects. Although if you have sensitive skin I would only recommend this every other day as a maximum and see how you skin adjusts to it.

After the 1st week the instructions advise you to have 1 weeks break to allow your skin to adjust to the new regime and then continue every other day, so at the moment I am in the third week although I did cheat a little by using it a couple of times during the second week :).

The tub of cream which you get is a fair size at 50ml and you do only need a small amount yet I have only about a quarter left so perhaps I am being a little too generous with it.  As of yet I do not know whether you can purchase the re-fills or not but I would hope so as I can imagine the brush would need changing regularly - mine is already slighting misshaped! It does state to change the brush once a month.  Which seems a lot to be honest.

So to summarise...

Pros
  • Comes with batteries included
  • Large tub of cream which will last a while, if used sensibly
  • Reasonable price
  • Sturdy gadget, will last a while
  • Brushes only last a month?

Cons
  • Vibrations are quite harsh
  • Not sure whether re-fills are available
  • battery powered unlike clarisonic which means require changing if used often

All in all this is a good little gadget - personally I doubt I would purchase again once the product is used up.  Having said that I think the applicator could possibly be used with a regular exfoliant so I may have to try that in the near future as I do like the applicator. It does not have the quality of the Clarisonic Mia which I adore but this is a good treat for your skin for those on a budget and I would certainly recommend this to those with skin that needs a pick me up without shelling out for expensive spa treatments.

Please note - all products mentioned were purchased by me.  I am not being sponsored in any way shape or form for this review.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I cannot give specialist skin care advise nor can I advise whether this product is suitable for you.
